Sidebar Saturday: Star Trek Anniversary

Sidebar Saturday: a weekly feature in which Alyson waxes poetic about something other than the 1001 books list. "Other than" is here defined as "equally as geeky."

Happy 46th Anniversary Star Trek!

On September 8th, 1966, a little low-budget space opera aired for the first time on NBC. It didn't do so well in ratings, was considered a pariah by executives, and was ultimately cancelled after three short seasons. Still, Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek has crafted an enduring legacy, one that has rippled through all of SF since. Its spin-offs have been equally impactful, and together the shows have created an epic mythos with a dedicated fan following.

Trek has shaped my experience and interpretation of SF and dominated my fandom participation. My love for the series is permanently written on my body. So today, the anniversary of all things Trek, I present a smattering of Trek love for my fellow Trekkies.

  1. Great post Alyson!

I grew up with Star Trek and it will always have a special place in my heart. I am also a fan, at least to some degree of all the spinoff shows.

I did not realize that today was the anniversary of the first TV showing. Thanks for the remainder!

    Live Long and Prosper!
